Marvel Studios Celebrates Fashion Inspired by Black Panther at New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is coming to a close, but the celebration of fashion and film lives on. This season, Marvel Studios hosted Black Panther Welcome to Wakanda”—a celebration of fashion inspired by the new movie.

For the event, fashion designers—including CHROMAT, Cushnie et Ochs, Fear of God, Ikire Jones, Laquan Smith, Sophie Theallet, and Tome—were selected for their dedication to empowerment and individualism through fashion, to create couture pieces inspired by Marvel Studios’ Black Panther. They drew from the incredible storytelling, its empowering characters, and the iconic look of Wakanda, blended with their own unique design aesthetic, to create each visually stunning pieces. The one-of-a-kind designs are now being auctioned off for charity on Charitybuzz.

The star-studded event comes just ahead of the film’s release this Friday. It encompasses the idea that while Black Panther‘s nation of Wakanda may be fictional, its style is rooted in real history. Oscar nominated costume designer Ruth E. Carter searched all of Africa for inspiration in beading, embroidery, and patterns to ensure that the costumes in the film were not only true to the story, but felt fashion-forward as well.

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther is in theaters this Friday, February 16.
