One-On-One With Jack Irvine, Designer Of The Awesome Guardians Of The Galaxy Inspired T-Shirt

We love a statement tee, and we love Marvel Studios’ Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 – so what better way to combine the two by getting one of our fave up and coming Aussie artists to create a Guardians Of The Galaxy inspired t-shirt just in time for the Australian release of the film!

Sydney based designer Jack Irvine knows a thing or two about cosmic, colourful, wacky design – he has been drawing, crafting and creating since he was a kid. Known for his bright colours, eccentric design and funky vibe, Jack was the perfect artist for the job.

Tasked with the tricky job of creating a look that fused his own aesthetic with the punchy visuals of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2, Jack took the brief and ran with it. The end product is an awesome mix (see what we did there) of retro funk and modern cool and we cannot get enough of it! Check out Jack rocking his t-shirt at the Aussie launch party for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2!

We made it along to the event to chat with Jack on his visual style, how he got into designing and why Baby Groot reminds him of himself – check it out below.

Who were your heroes growing up, and how did they inspire you?
I was always inspired by the underdogs – no matter how much the odds were stacked against them it was always possible to win.

Where did your passion for design come from?
My passion for design came from a strong urge to create new things and to try and communicate an idea that I couldn’t put into words. I also wanted to make something that other people could enjoy.

How have your family or friends helped you achieve your dreams?
They have helped me so much! I’ve learnt everything from them. My mum and dad have supported my passion for art since the beginning and my friends inspire me daily, they have been the biggest help when it comes to making things I want to do come to life. It’s amazing how much they have helped me – without that I don’t think I would be an artist right now.

Growing up in Australia, can you think of any ‘Aussie’ moments that gave you inspiration for your designs?
Going to the beach on a hot day, putting on sunscreen, eating hot chips and drinking milkshakes. Also going to BBQ’s and having fun with my mates.

Which Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 character do you think is most like you, and why?
I would say Baby Groot, I think it is something about his strange way of talking and the innocence and kindness he has even if he accidentally does the wrong thing.

What was the best part about creating these T-shirts for Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2?
The best part would have to be when they come to life and seeing people wearing them.

Could you explain some of the icons/symbols you’ve used on the Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 t-shirt?
I have used a range of geometric shapes that I’ve seen in designs from the 80’s. I’ve chosen shapes that might represent action and movement, like the lightning bolt and also the yellow explosion shape. I also wanted to show the excitement and fun in the characters faces from the trailer.

How does it feel to see fans wearing your t-shirts?
It’s really cool! It makes all the hard work worth it, and gives me a positive buzz to want to create more!

What do you look forward to seeing most in the film?
Watching them kill some baddies and have fun doing it.

We like the way you think Jack, and we love the out-there design of the tee… and what a fun job! Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is out in cinemas now – get your tickets now.
