Happy Anniversary, Cinderella

One of the most signature moments in Disney Style history is Cinderella’s dress transformation at the wave of the Fairy Godmother’s wand.

Since Cinderella first premiered in 1950, dreamers and princesses-at-heart have all taken hope in that moment when a sweet girl gets a dress that makes her look and feel as beautiful on the outside as she’s always been on the inside.

For Cinderella, “the dress” had already stood in as the key to an evening of fun, away from her ho-hum life of chores and waiting hand and foot on her stepsisters. Cinderella’s undefeated hope and sweetness in the face of adversity were finally to be rewarded with a night out at the ball, which her mouse friends helped make possible with a generous gesture of a beautiful, if not brand new, gown. For one night, because of the dress, Cinderella would get to lead the life she kept dreaming of.

Knowing this, we as children were particularly enraged when Anastasia and Drizella ruined the dress out of jealousy. In turn, we were even more ecstatic when the Fairy Godmother gifted Cinderella an even more beautiful gown that looked like it was made of spun magic itself. That dress became the promise of Cinderella’s earlier song, as the dream that she wished was beginning to come true.

The dress transformation scene itself is one of the most beautiful and recognizable moments in Disney animation history. Sparkles swirl all around her, the Fairy Godmother sings “Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo” and all at once Cinderella looks like a princess. Even if for just one night, Cinderella gets a break from reality, all because of magic, and the magic of a dress.

There have been several dress-based transformations in Disney films since: Tiana in Princess and the Frog, Ariel in The Little Mermaid, even Elsa changes her style in the midst of letting it go. But, arguably, Cinderella’s moment is one of the most magical style changes in Disney’s animated history.
