Add a little Mary Poppins magic to your wardrobe this Summer

Emily Blunt is no stranger to playing stylish, confident women on our screens. Now she is swapping her stilettos for a sensible heel and classic Edwardian style looks in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns, in cinemas now. It’s a role Emily is perfect for and we are loving the looks she carries throughout the film.

Three-time Academy Award winning costume designer, Sandy Powell, has reached into her own magical bottomless bag and created a fresh take on the iconic character. Powell gives us the instantly-recognisable 1930s fashion associated with everyone’s favourite nanny, updated with modern fabrics, prints (hello polka dots, we see you too pinstripes) and cinched silhouettes.

It’s a style we absolutely love so here are four tips on popping a little Poppins into your summer look.

1. Add ruffles

Have an important uni presentation, job interview, or occasion that calls for you to be buttoned up like a boss? Look no further than Mary’s tendency toward a feminine ruffle. Pair a ruffle blouse with a high-waisted fitted skirt. Every task you undertake will be a piece of cake. If your vibe is a little more cool than corporate, you can swap it out for a denim skirt.

2. Hats, of course

Hats are a necessity in summer and Mary loves a smart-looking one, like her tilted cobalt blue hat and flower. Replicate it if you have an event that welcomes hats and fascinators. If your vibe is a little more casual, opt for a straw boater hat and pair it with a summer dress. Heaven.

Fashion hack: Go for a dress with a puff sleeve and high neckline for extra Poppins cred.

3. Patterns on patterns

Mary has mastered the clash of patterns by mixing pin stripes and polka dots. Be brave and do the same. Otherwise, opt for an element of polka dots, and don’t be afraid to throw some colour into the mix.

4. You’ll totes need a tote

For those of us like Mary who can’t fathom packing light, tote bags are the invention to save us all. For day, opt for a neutral utility style tote – the ideal size for tablets, notebooks, novels and lunch on-the-go. For a weekender, look no further than a giant canvas bag. Mary’s bag is made from carpet so we know she is all about durable fabrics. If you need to run from your desk to a date or a night out, a classic pink flap bag will add an element of fun.

It’s easy to add a little of Mary Poppins’ style to your summer look. We also can’t wait for winter when she’ll be our inspiration when we’re choosing coats, scarfs and shawls.  You can catch Mary Poppins returns in cinemas now and get tickets here.
