Last week, we got to meet with knitwear designer Josh Bennett and honestly, he may be the coolest person we’ve met recently.
Josh Bennett knits. Now, we’re not talking your little ol’ grandma’s knitting, we’re talking about a really awesome dude who hand-knits men’s sweaters in roughly 4 days and sells them at Bergdorf Goodman. How’s that for a living? And now, Josh is collaborating with Marvel to create a Thor-inspired collection!
Knitting is my super power.
Josh learned how to knit from his grandmother when he was about eight years old. As he grew up, he stopped because–as he put it–“guys don’t knit”. Eventually, he moved to New York City at age 20 where he did musical theater, worked in a couple of yarn shops, went to the Fashion Institute of Technology, interned with designer Michael Bastian, and was later asked to become the sweater designer for Tommy Hilfiger. Phew! He’s now knitting in collaboration with Bergdorf Goodman–and, even more exciting–with Marvel!
I’m a huge Marvel fan and used to read the comics growing up but then the movies made the stories even more accessible. To prepare for this collaboration, I watched every Marvel movie and show (again). I had to step up my game so that my sweaters told the story and history of the comic. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t just throwing Thor’s face on a sweater.
Josh Bennett’s talent is a true hero example of breaking boundaries. We can’t wait to see his Marvel collection in real life on November 10!
