Inspired by decades of Disney films, we’ve updated signature looks from the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s and mined the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s for fashion gems, speeding through sixty years of fashion for a mini-series of throwback fashions. Having arrived solidly in the present, however, we realized that contemporary fashions are so much harder to pin down! Undeterred, we decided to give it our best shot with our final installment of ’90s, ’00s, and ’10s fashion.
Animated Films: Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, Toy Story, Hercules, Mulan
What a decade for fashion and Disney films! Between the flannels, the crop tops, and the fabulous accessories, the ’90s brought so many trends that have been resurrected today in full force. For this outfit set, we combined an a-line denim skirt with a black top. The velvet choker reminds us of Beauty and the Beast‘s romantic style, while the gold purse channels Aladdin‘s lamp and the fashion of the decade at once.
Animated Films: The Emperor’s New Groove, Monsters, Inc., Lilo & Stitch, Finding Nemo, Cars, WALL-E, UP
Though the Disney films released in the 2000s were particularly great, when it comes to the fashion from this era, the phrase “too soon” may come to mind. Track suits, tiny purses, boot cut jeans, aviator sunglasses, cropped jackets, and graphic tees—the decade was a veritable trove of delightfully dated fashions. Though it gave us serious flashbacks to a recent era of fashion we haven’t quite reconciled ourselves with yet, we combined the highlights from this decade into an outfit inspired by its memorable movies. We paired an Emperor’s New Groove inspired purse with a pair of bright converse deserving of Lightning McQueen.
Animated Films: Tangled, Brave, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Inside Out, Zootopia
Though we’re barely halfway through the 2010s, it’s recycled, revived, and remixed countless fashions into the fun blend we see on the street today. High-waisted bottoms are making a comeback, while accessories have taken on a minimalist aesthetic. Particularly inspired by Inside Out and Tangled, we matched floral, gold jewelry, and the brightest of bright accessories for an outfit that brings us pure joy.
