There’s something magical about the fashions of Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century. Straddling the worlds of ’90s fashion and unknown future aesthetics, it manages to come across as both dated and forward-facing, resulting in a sometimes fabulous, sometimes quirky—but always fun—fashion concoction. Though the movie takes place in 2049, a deeper dive into the movie’s fashions reveals some of its signature predictions to be trending already.
In case you haven’t heard, there is a Disney Channel Original Movie marathon a short 9 days away. We’re using it as the perfect excuse to revisit this Disney Channel classic and pick apart the fashion trends it’s gotten right so far.
It’s no secret that pin flair is a trend we are very fond of. That being said, we were psyched to see this trend surviving well into the 21st century. Here, Zenon and Nebula wears some DIY pins on their vests, adding a unique touch to their futuristic uniforms.
Buns (and more buns)
Let’s talk hair—specifically, the messy top knot Zenon sports at the start of the film. A perfect addition any casual outfit, this style is not only one of our favorite styles of today, but yet another instance of Zenon correctly predicting the future.
Look familiar? This bold double-bun look also reminds us of recent hair trends. Its creative wrap-in metallic ribbons give us inspiration for future styles.
Odds are, many of us have sported the “athleisure” look recently. Maybe you’re rocking trendy sweatpants as you read this now. Suffice it to say, form fitting leisurewear that balances comfort and style is all the rage, and a trend Zenon and her group of pals definitely had down pat.
Given that we can purchase handmade crafts online these days—or click through to Disney Style’s archives for DIY inspiration anytime we want— we think it’s safe to say we’re living in an age of DIY. Nebula and Zenon’s love for crafting may have gotten them into trouble in the film, but we’re loving the fact that the movie knew this would be a choice, style-related hobby in the future.
A short while ago, Disney Style professed its affection for Disney Dad Shirts. Zenon was right to predict yet another style trend, placing these shirts front and center. Andrew and Greg each wear vibrant button-ups—one pattern louder than the other—and make fashion statements that withstand the test of time.
Where does he get them all? Wearing what appears to be a dad shirt in a material with a mysterious shine in this second photo, Greg’s top quite possibly forecasts where today’s trend is headed.

From hair styles to clothing preferences, Zenon’s successful predictions have us wondering what other trends they may have gotten right. Personally, I’m gunning for the stress helmet.
