At this year’s Toronto Fashion Week, the Force was definitely strong on the runway. Disney Consumer Products, in partnership with the Mercedes-Benz Start Up Competition, hosted a Star Wars-inspired design competition where six finalists were tasked with creating a look inspired by Star Wars.
From Princess Leia’s iconic white dress to neoprene, chain mail-like Darth Vader look, each designer combined the familiarity of Star Wars with sleek, elevated designs. Take a look at the six designs below:
The panel of judges, including Academy Award winner and set decorator, Roger Christian (who designed R2-D2 and the lightsaber), crowned José Manuel St-Jacques and Simon Bélanger of UNTTLD the winner for their Princess Leia-inspired look from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
This isn’t the first time the Star Wars universe has inspired the runway. Rodarte draped printed scenes from the films onto flowy dresses for the fall/winter 2014 season, while Preen used Darth Vader’s helmet as a major element of their collection the same year.
