After we saw the trailer for Disney’s Cinderella, we immediately started counting down the days until the film’s release on March 13, 2015. This first glimpse revealed the fairy tale kingdom, where Ella’s story will unfold on a grand and magical scale.
With an enchanting backdrop created, Academy Award winner Sandy Powell had the task of designing costumes that were just as timeless and unique as the story itself. Powell started working on concepts of the characters’ looks two years before principal photography even started. She decided to blend the 1940’s with the 19th century, to create a one-of-a-kind look for the film.
While we got to see some of the looks in the trailer, these images from the December issue of Vogue, shot by Annie Leibovitz, give us a closer look at Powell’s designs. The incomparable Cate Blanchett, balances just the right amount of glamour and wickedness in her black and green grown. Ella’s stepsisters look over the top in the floral frocks, Peter Pan collars, and tightly wound curls.
And of course, when it comes to *the dress*, Powell didn’t disappoint. Cinderella’s signature blue gown is truly breathtaking, and looks so dream-like with its sparkle and sleeves adorned with butterflies.
Be sure to check out the photos and an interview with Sandy Powell in Vogue’s December issue, on stands now. Disney’s Cinderella will be in theaters March 13, 2015.
